Space Planning and Design Approach

When the narration of existence begins from the earth, the end will always be beautiful.

The designers were approached with a 20-cent plot area, adjacent to National Highway NH66, North of Paravur, Ernakulam. This very location presented the designers with a challenge in providing safe and secure access. A gracious angular entry was designed, creating an exclusive entrance to the site, distorting the view but making it larger than life. A linear site abundant with diverse trees of various species. Retaining the lushness and verdure of the surroundings served as a guiding principle in the planning and layout process of the interior spaces. The layout mirrors the linearity of the site, maximizing potential usable spaces within. “I want to experience a home where my children can come back and unwind after a busy schedule with the living and dining spaces serving as the heart of its existence,” remarked the client. Understanding the client’s requirements was pivotal in designing spaces that reflect their core ideas and interests. Designed for a family of four members, the house covers a built-up area of 4650 sq ft and is planned to accommodate four bedrooms, living and dining rooms, guest rooms, and a state-of-the-art AV room, all completed with modern utilities in unwavering aesthetic charm. Designing functional spaces is approached with privacy and dignity

As one enters the house, the fragmented cubes on the exterior complement the interior space layout. Arranged in a grid format, all spaces are laid out bare in perfect geometry with physical and invisible boundaries that define them. The living room is spaced alongside the dining room, thus maximizing its usage as a single spacious room, complemented by a large opening that spills out into a private garden. A dining room is surely incomplete without the companionship of a kitchen. With a focus on tradition and hospitality, the kitchen was strategically positioned at the forefront of the floor plan, offering views of the front yard while maintaining privacy behind a row of louvers. The verticality of the space is accentuated by a wooden staircase that leads one to the upper story housing two bedrooms, an AV room, Gym and a spacious terrace that overlooks the entire site and surroundings.

The spaces are designed in compliance with Vastu, with bedrooms placed in alignment with the abutting internal road. Toilets were placed on the western façade, which would serve as thermal insulation for the living area. All bedrooms are designed to nurture and reflect user preferences with custom-made furniture and utilities. There is a sense of privacy and seclusion that instills companionship and togetherness as one enters the informal spaces and seamlessly merges into spaces of formal heights and verve. The varying heights within the interior complement and contradict the spaces. An interesting feature of space planning complies with the idea that every functional space is designed in relation to the exterior environment. Every room offers an experiential interplay between interior and exterior spaces, facilitated by expansive windows or inviting balcony areas

Materiality

The entire residence is built with sustainable Porotherm bricks. An eco-friendly approach is adopted that helps to reduce heat radiated from exterior walls, thereby reducing internal temperature. The use of light and dark shades combined with recesses emphasizes the three-dimensional depth and quality of the facade. The idea of cubist oddities, inspired by art movement cubism, brought out the conceptions of extruded, superimposed, and abstracted cubes. A flat slab featuring deep overhangs serves to enhance visual depth while also shielding the exterior surfaces from varying weather conditions. Wooden tiles are used for the exterior cladding. The commingling of frugal materials, muted palette, and minimal aesthetics brings out the life in the house. The energy-efficient and sustainable characteristics of this remarkable dwelling arise from thoughtfully chosen design elements, such as integrating existing on-site vegetation, and an exacting planning process. The aim is to maintain simplicity while enhancing appeal through a cohesive use of a consistent color palette and materials.

Every great project starts with a “Hello”.
